Food tastes better when your catch it yourself - or at least when you eat it on a rough wooden table. That's why rustic dining rooms are so hot right now - they transport you back to a simpler time, or to a remote cabin in the woods where your meals are the satisfying end to a hard day's work.
Lighting
In a rustic dining room, natural light is key. However, since most of us eat after the sun goes down, it can't be UV rays all the time. Layer warm lights to imitate the kind of glow that you might find in the great outdoors. Try hanging a few low-hanging overhead lights with iron details over your dining room table for deep woods ambiance.
The custom window treatments you choose are totally up to you. Keep with the color scheme, but aside from that the sky is the limit. Natural roller shades, drapes and bamboo blinds are all fair game in your new rustic dining room.
Natural materials
What better way to create a woodsy dining room than with natural materials? But nature-inspired accents aren't limited to wood. While an oversized, rough wooden dining room table is a staple of this particular style, that doesn't mean it's the only material you can use. Consider installing large slate tiles for the flooring and topping it with a plush but modest rug for a touch of coziness.
Another form of natural materials include greenery. While flowers don't necessarily fit into the whole roughing it vibe, you could keep a collection of succulents in the middle of your table as a nature-inspired centerpiece. If you want to add a touch of femininity, put a few long-stem flowers in a vase.
Keep it on the simple side
The rule of thumb when it comes to decorating a rustic room is to keep everything on the simpler side. The space should look as though it could have been built without the use of modern technology. Patterns can be used, but try to keep them in a low contrast and in a darker hue. The less frills you end up featuring in the room, the more successfully you will pull off rustic chic. That doesn't mean eliminating all details, but try to minimize it as much as you're able.
